How Often Should I See My Partner When We Are Dating?
The first stage of a dating relationship is called the Infatuation Stage. This is the stage where you’re falling in love. Lust is flowing like a river, you can’t get enough of each other and the sex is hot. It’s easy to be consumed by your lover when you’re in this stage. There’s a tendency to drop friends like bath bombs. But infatuation can fizzle as a fast as a firework unless you restore sanity and keep a good balance.
Relationships are complex, so I like to give my clients simple tools they can readily use. If you’re dating and live fairly close to each other, use the 2/1 rule to balance your time. The 2/1 rule means you can see your partner for 2 dates during the week plus 1 overnight. Your dates might be lunch, dinner or an activity together. The overnight might fall on the weekend or when you have a couple of days off in succession. If you follow the 2/1 rule, it means you’ll have plenty of time to see friends and family, attend to boring things like laundry and have time to do your self-care. There’s nothing wrong with texting your partner a few sweet nothings on days you don’t see each other. This keeps you dialed in and connected. But resist the temptation to see each other every day. Finding a balance within the Infatuation Stage will keep things fresh for longer. After all, it’s hard to appreciate love when it’s past its sell-by date!
