If you feel stuck in depression or anxiety, you experience looping thoughts. The road to feeling better starts with an important beginning skill which comes from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It’s called reframing. First, let’s consider why good thinking is crucial for good physical health.
Why Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Is Used at Vibrant Health Company
Thinking is a health f
- Just as you try to eat well when you want to feel good, you must adopt a healthy process for your thoughts.
- Just as food nourishes and changes your physical condition, even your DNA, research shows that using constructive, helpful thinking does the same.
Growing new neurons and new ways of thinking:
- Repeat “I want to feel good” as a simple mantra when you notice your thoughts turn to negative reruns, or when you behave in ways you know will sabotage your happiness.
Consider the following passage by Jack Kornfield. I hope it will motivate you to learn & practice CBT.
“Whatever we regularly think about colors our experience. Once we start to watch our thoughts, we notice that most of them are reruns. Thought can be your friend or your enemy. No one can help you or harm you more. Our life is shaped and determined by our thoughts. Our fears often do not turn out to be accurate predictors. We don’t have to take them as truths. Thoughts create a painfully limited and false sense of self. Retraining our minds requires steady, patient effort. The power of mind transformation is scientifically documented, and it is called neuroplasticity. Our brains can be reshaped so that thought distortions do not create suffering. Begin to plant the seeds of more loving, courageous and kind thoughts until they take over and root in your heart and mind.”
How to Reframe: A Summary
-Notice unhelpful thoughts.
-Pause and breathe.
-Challenge the unhelpful thought.
-Reply (talk back to the thought) with a soothing or helpful thought.
